THE MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD

The Mysterious Cities of Gold

TOP TRUMPS

There is hardly any MCoG merchandise. I was thinking, wouldn't it be possible to come up with a simple idea, at least vaguely to do with MCoG. I thought perhaps a game of some sort. Then I had an idea.

Anyone remember Super Top Trumps? They were all the rage back at the start of the 1990s. At least, they were where I lived. You could get Top Trumps for everything - Marvel Comics, Aeroplanes, Sports Cars, you name it. Even trucks. So why not have a set of MCoG Top Trumps?

The game is very simple. You take 32 cards, shuffle them, and deal them out to each player (2-8 players). The cards have a picture and maybe as many as eight pieces of information on them. If it was a Sports Car set, the information might be engine size, engine capacity etc. If it was a Fantasy set (like the Marvel Comics), it might be height & weight etc. One player reads out a piece of information from his or her top card. Everyone else looks at their top card for the same piece, and the one with the highest value takes all the top cards and may then choose what to read from the next card. The winner is the player who gains all the cards, people who run out of cards leaving the game.

Of course, the picture on the card has no importance as far as the game goes except to determine what values are given for height etc. Normally these figures are out of 100.

I have done a trial set to see how it would look. Apologies to those whose screen captures I, um, borrowed. It actually looks quite good. There are about 36 available characters in MCoG, all of whom could be used, but the availability of pictures restricts the total to 32, which is probably the best number to have. All the old sets of Top Trumps used to have 32 cards.

The categories I chose were :

Strength
Skill (fighting ability)
Power (hierarchy, so to speak)
Intelligence
Height
Weight
Episodes (the number of episodes in which they appear)

All these are out of 100, (except Episodes which is of course out of 39). The figures
have to be fairly balanced between 0 and 100 over all the cards, but they are limited
to a degree by the characters. For example, you can't give Mendoza 5 for Height or
Esteban a Strength of 100.

The characters I used were (in order of decreasing Episodes) :
Esteban Zia Mendoza Pedro Sancho Tao Kukapetl Gomez Gaspard Kalmec Menatour Teteola Marinche The Doctor Chief Kraka Pizarro Yupanci Wyena Captain Perez Wynacocha Myena Papakamayo Kecha The High Priest Alvarez Karuga Amazon Queen Apo Mayuka Laoda Pasha Father Rodriguez

This is how the cards would look. There would be one card for each MCoG
character.
(Actual size will be 3.95in X 2.5in)

Two things to say - One is that I didn't make the screen captures. Two is that I don't have a printer with sufficient quality to make the cards look really good. My trial set is half-decent, done with a HP 670C Inkjet, but it's not good enough. Can anyone help?
